Annual General Conference 2008

Over 90 people attended the 2008 LVQ Annual Conference on Saturday, October 25. Dr. Ariel Fenster delighted participants with a lecture on the history and health benefits of chocolate. Volunteers and students were treated to a sneak peek at the LVQ literacy video, due out in early 2009, and participated in morning and afternoon workshops. To see all the photos, click here. 2 With Mona.. 11:00-12:00 Mona Arsenault Come talk with Mona about... talking to the doctor, getting a prescription filled, understanding how to follow a treatment -what can be done to make your health easier. Come share your experiences with other students and hear what they have to say. This is your chance to discuss how you feel about using health and social services. S
3 Health information - how comprehensible is it? 11:00-12:00 Julie Patterson Reading a prescription or a health information pamphlet might seem like child's play to you, but you might be surprised to learn that quite a few health information pamphlets are incomprehensible to many people. Take this opportunity to assess the readability level of some of the health and social service information currently out on the market, and see how it can be improved. T

3 Family Meals - Eating together just got better 1:15-3:30 Sarah Wiebe Eating healthy is not just what you eat, but how you eat it and where. Eating as a family at the table seems to have taken a back seat to busy schedules, split shifts at work, soccer games, and TV. Did you know that children are less likely to become overweight or obese if they eat with their family at the table? They also perform better at school. In this workshop we'll discuss the importance of the family mealtime ritual. We'll learn about the benefits of a family meal time. We'll also take a look at how you plan, grocery shop, prepare and cook a meal as a family. S
4 Increase Your Health! 1:15-3:30 Julie Patterson This workshop will introduce you to North Bay's Literacy and Health Project and how it led to the Health Literacy Binder. You will gain an understanding of the importance and the components of health literacy. You will discover your health literacy level by actively assessing yourself using "The Newest Sign". You may be surprised! A basic health history has been developed and will be shared. Because medication errors are a major cause of hospital admissions, guidelines to help with understanding medications will be discussed. A basic medication record will be shared.

A trip to the doctor will be more effective if you are prepared. This workshop will help. A good tool for tutors. Maximum - 25 participants

5 Health Law 1:15-3:30 Samuel Singer This workshop is about health law and how it affects you. We will talk about your rights as a patient, including your right to refuse treatment and to see your medical file. We will also learn about choosing who will make decisions for you if you can't take care of yourself. Finally, we will discuss how the workers insurance plan works if you get hurt while working or volunteering. ALL
6 From Head to Heart: The art of positive self-talk 1:15-3:30 Deborah Parkes What we tell ourselves about life's ups and downs can make a big difference in how we cope and feel. It can also affect our physical health and the quality of our relationships. This workshop will provide tips for coping with stress and uncertainty. Participants will also come up with their own positive self-talk messages. S
